Athena — 10.6 kg | 2 yrs | Mixed Breed | Located in Mexico | Ready for the next flight to YVR — Sweet, affectionate, and ready to be someone's one and only. Athena's story began when she was abandoned in the middle of a road and left to fend for herself. Thankfully, she was rescued before something terrible happened and given the chance to start over. Today, Athena is safe, healthy, and hoping for a family of her own. Athena is a loving girl who enjoys being close to her people. She has a sweet, affectionate nature and thrives on companionship. She is the kind of dog who forms strong bonds and simply wants to be loved and included. Athena would be happiest as the only pet in the home. She prefers not to share her space with other dogs and is not suitable for a home with cats. In return, she offers complete devotion and would love nothing more than to be the center of someone's world. At just over 10 kg, Athena is a wonderful size and would make a loyal companion for someone looking for a loving dog to share everyday life with. Botas — 8 Years | 17 kg | Located in Mexico | Ready for the next flight to YVR — Safe at last and hoping for the chance to begin a beautiful new chapter. Botas once belonged to someone who loved him dearly. Sadly, after his owner passed away, he found himself alone and trying to survive on the streets. Thankfully, he was surrounded by kind neighbors who watched over him. They gave him the name Botas, made sure he had food, cared for him when he wasn't feeling well, and did everything they could to keep him safe. But despite their love and dedication, life on the streets was becoming increasingly dangerous. Concerned for his safety, they reached out to Yara once again, and this time she was able to bring Botas into her care. Today, Botas is safe and receiving the love and veterinary care he deserves while he waits for the next chapter of his life to begin. When I think about Botas, I can't help but imagine how happy his owner would be knowing that he is loved, protected, and being given a second chance. At 8 years old and 17 kg, Botas is at such a wonderful age. We would love nothing more than to see him experience the kind of life we have seen so many other dogs enjoy after making the journey to Vancouver — peaceful walks, soft beds, cozy evenings on the couch, and the comfort of spending his days beside people who love him. Old enough to appreciate the simple pleasures in life, yet with plenty of happy years still ahead of him, Botas would make a wonderful companion for someone looking for a loyal and devoted friend. Shiver — 10 kg | 1 Year Old | Female | Located in Mexico | Ready for a Family of Her Own Gentle, resilient, and hoping for the chance to discover what it feels like to be loved. Shiver was found living on the streets with her mother near a busy road. A few kind neighbours would leave food for them from time to time, but every day was a struggle to survive. Yara wanted to rescue them both, but Shiver was terrified of people and wouldn't allow anyone to get close. The rescue had to be be carefully planned because they were living in a dangerous area where they were constantly at risk of being hit by passing vehicles. Sadly, before Yara could bring them both to safety, tragedy struck. Shiver's mother was hit by a truck. She suffered for several days in pain before she was finally humanely euthanized to end her suffering. Yara was determined that Shiver would not suffer the same fate. Today, Shiver is safe in Yara's care, where she is receiving regular meals, shelter, veterinary care, and something she has likely never experienced before—patience and kindness. Although she is still frightened, each day she becomes a little more confident as she learns that not everyone uses their hands to cause harm. Now Shiver is looking toward a brighter future. She is searching for a calm, patient family who will give her the time she needs to build trust and discover what it means to feel safe. As her confidence continues to grow, she will become a loyal and devoted companion to the family who gives her the chance she has always deserved. Azul — 11.6 kg | 2 Years Old | Female | Husky Mix | Located in Mexico | Ready for a Family of Her Own Gentle, affectionate, and ready to leave her past behind. Azul was found wandering along a busy main street after neighbours reported seeing her roaming the area for several days. Concerned for her safety, they reached out for help, and she was brought to the veterinarian for a thorough examination. During her visit, it was discovered that Azul had already been spayed. Today, Azul is safe in rescue and doing very well. She has settled in beautifully and has shown herself to be a friendly, gentle dog who enjoys the company of both people and other dogs. As she continues to settle into her new routine, her sweet personality shines a little brighter every day. Now Azul is looking toward a brighter future. We would love nothing more than to see her leave her life on the streets behind and begin the next chapter of her life with a family who will love her, include her, and give her the safe, happy home she deserves. Azul can travel to Vancouver (YVR) on our August flight. She is currently receiving treatment for Ehrlichiosis, a tick-borne illness that is common in Mexico. Her treatment will be completed in July, and her 4DX SNAP test will be repeated before she travels. Rocki — 5.8 kg Weight updated 7/17/26 | Puppy | Mixed Breed | Located in Mexico | Ready for a family of her own Sweet, resilient, and ready for a loving family. Rocki was found living underneath a supermarket with his siblings. They had made their shelter beneath the building, hidden behind a small opening in the cement where they would crawl in and out each day. It was no place for puppies to grow up. Surrounded by dirt, rocks, and garbage, they had no warm bed, toys, or safe place to call home. The owners of the market would sometimes leave food for the puppies, and that kindness helped them survive. But surviving is not the same as living. These puppies deserved safety, comfort, and the chance to be loved. When help arrived, Rocki and the other puppies were carefully pulled out through the opening beneath the building and brought to safety. Today, Rocki is in Yara's care, where he is receiving regular meals, shelter, kindness, and the love every puppy deserves. Now Rocki is looking toward a brighter future. We would love to see him adopted and begin the next chapter of his life with a family of his own—one that will cherish him, include him, and give him the happy life he has never had. Balam — 12 kg | 1 yr | Lab Mix | Located in Mexico | Ready for the next flight to YVR — Sweet, resilient, and best as the only pet. Balam is under one year old and already has a story of survival. He was abandoned and left tied outside on the street, and when Yara first found him he was only about six months old and in very poor condition. He almost didn’t survive. Instead of turning away, Yara stepped in to help him. She took him for veterinary care and made sure he recovered. Today, Balam is healthy, safe, and ready for a home of his own. The person who originally asked for help told Yara that if she could not take him, he should simply be put back on the street. Yara could never do that to him. She kept him safe, knowing he would not survive on his own. Balam is a sweet, loving boy who deserves the chance to finally belong to someone. He would do best as the only pet in the home where he can receive all the love and attention for himself. He is able to arrive in Canada on the next available flight once adopted. Maya — Female | 1 Year Old | 9 kg | Small/Medium Mixed Breed | Located in Mexico Maya was rescued along with her puppies after they were found living in appalling conditions. Thankfully, the little family was brought to safety together, and now that her puppies are being cared for, we get to focus on finding a home for their mom too. There is something especially touching about the mothers we rescue. So much of their story begins with looking after their babies, and then comes the moment when it becomes their turn to be looked after, loved, and included as part of a family. What we would love for Maya now is a home where she can simply enjoy being someone’s dog. Walks, a comfortable place to sleep, companionship, affection, and all of the ordinary little things that make up family life. Her past does not need to define what comes next. DENNY — Male Puppy | Spaniel Mix (Best Guess) | Approx. 2.76 kg | Located in Mexico Denny is a little puppy who should have been spending his days playing, exploring and being loved. Instead, he was being kept with his mom and sibling in a small, cramped space, where they were drinking dirty water from the floor. When Yara was notified about the dogs, she was able to secure them and immediately take them into her care. They were taken to the veterinarian and then brought home with Yara, where Denny’s life looks very different today. He is now living right in Yara’s home with her family, her grandson and many other dogs. He is being held, cuddled, played with and given the opportunity to simply be a puppy. And Denny LOVES people. He is a loving, playful little boy who loves being held and being close to people. He is good with other dogs and cats, and he is growing up surrounded by animals and family life. At approximately 2.76 kg, Denny is still a young puppy with plenty of growing, learning and puppy adventures ahead of him. What we would love now is for him to have a family of his own to grow up with. DEMI — Female Puppy | Spaniel Mix (Best Guess) | Approx. 2.6 kg | Located in Mexico Demi’s story began alongside her brother Denny and their mom, in circumstances no puppy should have to experience. The little family was being kept in a small, cramped space, with the puppies drinking dirty water from the floor. When Yara learned about them, she was able to secure the dogs, get them out of those conditions and take them to the veterinarian for care. Today, Demi is experiencing a very different kind of life. She is staying right in Yara’s home, surrounded by her family, her grandson and many other dogs. Instead of being confined to a small space, she gets to play, explore, receive affection and learn what everyday family life feels like. Demi is a loving and playful little girl who enjoys being held and absolutely loves people. She is good with other dogs and cats and is getting plenty of socialization while living as part of Yara’s busy household. At approximately 2.6 kg, Demi is just slightly smaller than her brother. She is still a young puppy with plenty of learning, playing and discovering the world ahead of her, and we would love for the next part of her story to include a family of her own. ESTRELLA — Female Puppy | Mixed Breed | Approx. 6.3 kg | Located in Mexico Estrella was rescued with her siblings after they were found in danger near the river. Yara stepped in quickly to bring them into her care, where they received veterinary attention and could begin enjoying life as puppies should. Estrella is a gentle, loving little girl. She enjoys being around the other dogs in the rescue and loves people and children. She can be a little quiet at times, but don’t let that fool you — Estrella also has that wonderful puppy energy. She loves to play, enjoys affection and has a sweet, loving personality. Being surrounded by people and other dogs in the rescue is giving her lots of opportunities to play, socialize and experience the everyday activity of life around her. What Estrella needs now is a family of her own — people who will love her, include her in their lives and enjoy watching this sweet little puppy discover her world. ARIA — 1 Year | 10 kg | Female | Mixed Breed | Located in Mexico Aria came to Yara's attention after she learned about a young mother dog living with her babies in a very confined space. Yara spoke with the family and was eventually able to convince them to let Aria go so that she could have the opportunity for a different life. We are grateful to her family for being willing to make that decision and allowing us to take her into our care. Today, Aria is staying with a wonderful foster in Mexico — a kind gentleman Yara knows who has opened his home to her while we look for her family in British Columbia. I had the opportunity to meet both of them while I was in Mexico. Aria was such a happy little girl. Her tail was going, she was friendly, interested in meeting me and clearly enjoying the attention. It was lovely to see her comfortable and happy in her foster home, and equally lovely to meet the person who is taking such good care of her while she waits. Aria is only one year old and 10 kg. We're not certain of her breed — she is a true mixed breed, although there may possibly be some Border Collie in the mix. Her babies have been given their chance. Now we'd really like to give their mom hers. Aria is currently in Mexico and can travel to British Columbia on one of our upcoming rescue flights once an adoption application has been approved. I personally fly to Mexico to bring our rescues home. MAGGIE — Approx. 4 Years | Female | Weight To Be Confirmed | Located in Mexico | Ready for the next flight to YVR Sometimes you walk into a place filled with dogs and, for whatever reason, one little face stops you. That was Maggie. While I was in Mexico, Yara and I visited one of the local shelters that we sometimes bring food to. They are wonderful people doing so much to help dogs in their community, and there were many dogs in their care that day. And then I saw Maggie. My immediate thought was, “What is this little sweetheart doing here?” She was so friendly, so full of personality and just as sweet as pie. I remember thinking that surely someone would fall in love with this little girl. I wanted to take her with us, but there was simply no room. Yara told me, “Next time.” I hate those two words in rescue. 😂 I understand them — Yara only has so much space — but that doesn't mean I have to like them. Thankfully, Maggie's “next time” came pretty quickly. When we went back for another visit, there she was. I asked Yara again, “Please, can we take her?” This time, Maggie came with us. She's now at Yara's home and doing wonderfully. Her testing results have been very good, which we are extremely happy about, and she's showing us exactly the personality I saw in her that first day. She has lovely energy, enjoys playing with the other dogs and has also been around cats at Yara's home. Maggie is approximately four years old, and we're waiting to confirm her weight. Out of all those dogs that day, there was just something about this little girl that made me stop. I'm very glad “next time” became this time. Maggie is now waiting for someone else to notice exactly what I noticed when I first saw her. RENATA — Female | Poodle Mix | Approx. 10 Years | 16 kg | Located in Mexico There are some dogs you see and simply cannot leave behind. For me, Renata was one of them. I was in Mexico when I saw her on the side of the road. Her coat was so dirty and severely matted that it was difficult to even imagine what she looked like underneath it all. I couldn't stop thinking about how long she must have been living that way — and how uncomfortable she must have been. I pleaded with Yara to please take her. Space at Yara's home was already very limited, and I knew I was asking her to make room for one more dog. But I couldn't stand the thought of driving away and leaving Renata there. Yara went across the street to get her, and Renata didn't resist or struggle. She simply allowed Yara to pick her up and carry her away. That gentleness has stayed with me. After everything she had been living with, she was still so trusting and agreeable. We took her straight to the groomer. Her coat was so badly matted that it needed to be shaved, and they estimated she may not have had a proper bath in at least a year. And then we got to meet the Renata underneath all of that. Clean, comfortable and smiling. Looking at her before and after photos almost feels like looking at two different dogs. Yara tells me she is so happy now, and that's what I love most about seeing her today. Her circumstances changed, but that beautiful gentleness was there all along. We believe Renata is a Poodle mix and approximately 10 years old. She weighs 16 kg. She may be an older girl. That's okay with us. Renata doesn't need us to give her back the years that are already behind her. She just needs someone to make the years ahead of her count. NICO — Approx. 10–11 Years | Male | Located in Mexico Nico wasn't the dog I was supposed to notice. I was watching a video posted by a local shelter we sometimes visit when I'm in Mendoza. They do wonderful work feeding dogs throughout their community, and the video was showing some of the local dogs they care for. And there, somewhere in the background, was this dog. I couldn't stop looking at him. I started taking screenshots from the video and sending them, asking, “Who is this dog?” I learned that he was an older dog living locally without a home. From that moment, I wanted to find him. I asked Yara if we could please go looking for him, and thankfully, Nico was found. His coat was in such poor condition that much of it needed to be clipped away. He was dehydrated and clearly needed veterinary attention after going without the care he deserved for far too long. We believe he's approximately 10 or 11 years old. And I know what some people will think when they see that number: He's too old. I don't see him that way. My own dog lived until 18 years old. None of us knows how many years any dog has ahead of them. What I do know is that the number of years remaining doesn't determine how much those years matter. I want Nico to know what a soft dog bed feels like. I want someone to be excited when he walks into the room. I want him to know evenings on the couch, a hand reaching down to pet him, good food in his bowl and the security of knowing that tomorrow, he'll still be wanted. He deserves that. Right now, we're concentrating on his health. He was quite dehydrated when he was initially assessed, and some of his bloodwork needs to be monitored. He has been placed on a veterinarian-recommended renal diet, and we'll repeat his bloodwork after he's had some time to recover, eat properly and rehydrate. We'll update his medical information as we learn more. I'm not looking for someone who sees an old dog and feels sorry for him. I'm looking for someone who looks at Nico and still sees a future. For the right home, his adoption fee will be reduced. What matters most to me is giving this beautiful older boy the chance to experience the kind of life every dog deserves. SARGENTO — Puppy | 2.3 kg | Male | Located in Mexico Sargento’s journey to us started with a bus ride. 🐾 While I was in Mexico visiting Yara and meeting the dogs, we went to the bus station in Mendoza to pick up Yara’s daughter, Daixa. And of course, Daixa — another dog lover in the family — got off the bus with a puppy. 😂 My attention immediately went straight to this tiny little guy. He was only 2.3 kg, and my first question was basically, “Oh my God, where did you find him?” Sargento had been found in terrible conditions, surrounded by dirt and feces. Daixa simply couldn't leave him there. So she picked him up, brought him onto the bus with her and travelled all the way back to Mendoza with this little passenger beside her. And just like that, Sargento became part of our rescue. He has since been to the veterinarian and is doing well. He has a great appetite, loves playing with the other puppies at Yara's home and is showing us exactly what a puppy should be doing — eating, playing and enjoying himself. For such a tiny little dog, he has already had quite the journey. His first big trip was a bus ride to Mendoza. We're hoping his next one will be a flight to Vancouver, with a family waiting at the other end. PENELOPE — 3 Years | 5.5 kg | Female | Long-Haired Chihuahua Mix | Located in Mexico Penelope was found wandering along Calzada Morelos in Córdoba, Veracruz. Someone saw this little girl out on the street and reached out for help. Thankfully, Yara stepped in and brought her into our care. We don't know how long she had been out there or what her life looked like before she was found. That's a part of her story we'll probably never know. What we do know is that she's now safe, her medical testing has come back very good, she's already spayed, and she's doing well in Yara's care. Sometimes that's where a new story begins — someone notices a dog who needs help, someone else says yes, and suddenly everything changes. Now it's our turn to find her the home that comes next. STACEY — Female | Age & Weight To Be Confirmed | Located in Mexico | More Information Coming Soon There is something about Stacy that is difficult to capture in a photograph. You really need to see her move. She has this incredibly gentle way about her — soft, quiet and almost graceful. Nothing hurried, nothing demanding. It's simply who she is, and there is something so endearing about watching her. Yara drove several hours to bring this beautiful girl into our care, and I'm very grateful she did. When she was rescued, she was carrying a significant number of ticks. She was taken immediately to be cleaned up, the ticks were removed and parasite treatment was started. That's being handled, and now we're much more interested in getting to know her. Her age and weight are still to come, but I didn't want to wait to introduce her. She's simply too lovely not to share. She'll have her complete veterinary testing, including her 4DX, CBC and a blood smear. If she tests positive for a tick-borne illness such as Ehrlichia, she'll be treated completely in Mexico and have follow-up bloodwork before she's cleared for travel. This is something we routinely test for and manage with our dogs. For now, she's eating well, being cared for and settling into a very different life. And I have a feeling that once people see the videos and get to see that beautiful little demeanor for themselves, Stacy won't need much help getting noticed. RAYO — 1 Year | 10 kg | Male | Chihuahua Mix | Located in Mexico | Ready for the next flight to YVR Some dogs make you wonder if they somehow know their life has just changed. Rayo was one of those dogs for me. While I was in Mexico, Yara and I went to a home where several rescued dogs were being kept. The person there had taken dogs off the streets and we are grateful for that, but the conditions inside the home were extremely difficult. We couldn't take everyone. We had room for two dogs, and standing there that day, we had to make the difficult decision about which two would leave with us. Rayo was one of them. And I will never forget how happy this little guy was to get out of there. It wasn't simply excitement about going somewhere new. He seemed genuinely thrilled to have been chosen. He was happy, affectionate and so ready to go with us. There are moments in rescue when you can't help but feel that a dog somehow knows something has changed — and with Rayo, I felt it. I've seen it many times with rescue dogs. You give them a warm bed, good food, kindness and a safe place to land, and there is something about the way they look at you. Call it relief, trust or gratitude — whatever it is, you can see it. Rayo is only about one year old and 10 kg. His beginning wasn't what we would have chosen for him, but thankfully, that's behind him now. He was chosen that day. Now we need someone to choose him for life. Rayo is ready to travel to Vancouver as soon as a family is waiting for him. ROCCO — 12 kg | Male | Mixed Breed | Located in Mexico Rocco is one of the dogs whose story I got to be part of personally. When I was in Mexico with Yara, I went with her to pick up Rocco and Rael. A local man had taken them in to keep them off the streets and away from some of the dangers dogs face there, including the trains, traffic and other dogs. I was surprised by how basic the conditions were, but I was also incredibly grateful. This man was doing what he could, with what he had, to keep these dogs out of danger. And then there was Rocco. The moment we brought him out, he was so happy. He was loving, friendly and affectionate, and absolutely thrilled with all the attention. I remember watching him take everything in and thinking what a genuinely sweet little dog he was. Rocco is now in Yara's care, where he's receiving good-quality food, regular parasite prevention and all of his veterinary care. He's doing very well. Now we need to find the home that comes next for him. Rocco is currently in Mexico and can travel to British Columbia on one of our upcoming flights once his adoption application has been approved. I personally fly to Mexico to bring our rescues home. AMY — Approx. 8 Years | Female | Located in Mexico | Mixed Poodle | Currently Receiving Medical Care Some dogs just get to me. Amy is one of them. She's tiny, she's about eight years old, and right now she's not well. She has tested positive for a tick-borne illness, and she has a tumor on the outside of her head that will also need to be addressed. But I want to show her now. Not when she's better. Not when the medical issues are behind her. Now. Because the dog you see today isn't necessarily the dog we're going to see a few months from now. I've watched this happen so many times over the years. Dogs come into rescue sick, neglected and needing medical care. We treat what needs treating. We give their bodies time to recover. And sometimes the transformation is incredible. That's what we're going to try to give Amy. Dr. Flores has a plan. First we deal with the tick-borne illness and get her stronger. Her bloodwork will be monitored, and when she's medically ready, we'll address the tumor on her head. Maybe she has six more years ahead of her. Maybe eight. We don't know. But I refuse to measure the value of her future by how she looks or feels today. She's here. We have her. And we're going to do everything within our power to get this little girl well. GRETA — 1 Year | Female | Mixed Breed | Located in Mexico Greta is a little girl who is going to need a special kind of home. She is currently in Yara’s care in Mexico, and I had the opportunity to meet her when I was there. Greta is very timid, and she has become quite attached to Yara. She looks to her for comfort and reassurance, and you can see how much having someone she trusts means to her. At only one year old, Greta has so much life ahead of her, but we know she isn’t the kind of dog who should simply be placed into a busy home and expected to adjust overnight. She needs someone who has time, patience and a lot of love to dedicate to her. Someone who understands that trust may come slowly and who will allow Greta to move at her own pace. We would ideally love to find someone who is home quite a bit and can give her the consistency and security she needs while she settles in. There is a very sweet little dog underneath that shyness. She just needs the right person to help her feel secure enough to show it. Greta is currently in Mexico and can travel to British Columbia on one of our upcoming rescue flights once an adoption application has been approved.
