The rescue had to be be carefully planned because they were living in a dangerous area where they were constantly at risk of being hit by passing vehicles. Sadly, before Yara could bring them both to safety, tragedy struck. Shiver's mother was hit by a truck. She suffered for several days in pain before she was finally humanely euthanized to end her suffering. Yara was determined that Shiver would not suffer the same fate. Today, Shiver is safe in Yara's care, where she is receiving regular meals, shelter, veterinary care, and something she has likely never experienced before—patience and kindness. Although she is still frightened, each day she becomes a little more confident as she learns that not everyone uses their hands to cause harm. Now Shiver is looking toward a brighter future. She is searching for a calm, patient family who will give her the time she needs to build trust and discover what it means to feel safe. The owners of the market would sometimes leave food for the puppies, and that kindness helped them survive. But surviving is not the same as living. When help arrived, Rocki and the other puppies were carefully pulled out through the opening beneath the building and brought to safety. Today, Aria is staying with a wonderful foster in Mexico — a kind gentleman Yara knows who has opened his home to her while we look for her family in British Columbia. I had the opportunity to meet both of them while I was in Mexico. Aria was such a happy little girl. Her tail was going, she was friendly, interested in meeting me and clearly enjoying the attention. It was lovely to see her comfortable and happy in her foster home, and equally lovely to meet the person who is taking such good care of her while she waits. Aria is only one year old and 10 kg. We're not certain of her breed — she is a true mixed breed, although there may possibly be some Border Collie in the mix. Her babies have been given their chance. Now we'd really like to give their mom hers. Aria is currently in Mexico and can travel to British Columbia on one of our upcoming rescue flights once an adoption application has been approved. I personally fly to Mexico to bring our rescues home. For me, Renata was one of them. I was in Mexico when I saw her on the side of the road. Her coat was so dirty and severely matted that it was difficult to even imagine what she looked like underneath it all. I couldn't stop thinking about how long she must have been living that way — and how uncomfortable she must have been. I pleaded with Yara to please take her. Space at Yara's home was already very limited, and I knew I was asking her to make room for one more dog. But I couldn't stand the thought of driving away and leaving Renata there. Yara went across the street to get her, and Renata didn't resist or struggle. She simply allowed Yara to pick her up and carry her away. That gentleness has stayed with me. After everything she had been living with, she was still so trusting and agreeable. We took her straight to the groomer. Her coat was so badly matted that it needed to be shaved, and they estimated she may not have had a proper bath in at least a year. And then we got to meet the Renata underneath all of that. Clean, comfortable and smiling. Looking at her before and after photos almost feels like looking at two different dogs. Yara tells me she is so happy now, and that's what I love most about seeing her today. Her circumstances changed, but that beautiful gentleness was there all along. We believe Renata is a Poodle mix and approximately 10 years old. She weighs 16 kg. She may be an older girl. That's okay with us. Renata doesn't need us to give her back the years that are already behind her. She just needs someone to make the years ahead of her count. You almost have to watch for it to notice. Once he is comfortable, his affectionate and happy personality is right there. Zuzu is 5 kg and Hugo is 4.5 kg, so even together they make a pretty small package. What matters most to us is finding a home that wants them both and understands that their bond is part of who they are. Rayo was one of those dogs for me. While I was in Mexico, Yara and I went to a home where several rescued dogs were being kept. The person there had taken dogs off the streets and we are grateful for that, but the conditions inside the home were extremely difficult. We couldn't take everyone. We had room for two dogs, and standing there that day, we had to make the difficult decision about which two would leave with us. Rayo was one of them. And I will never forget how happy this little guy was to get out of there. It wasn't simply excitement about going somewhere new. He seemed genuinely thrilled to have been chosen. He was happy, affectionate and so ready to go with us. There are moments in rescue when you can't help but feel that a dog somehow knows something has changed — and with Rayo, I felt it. I've seen it many times with rescue dogs. You give them a warm bed, good food, kindness and a safe place to land, and there is something about the way they look at you. Call it relief, trust or gratitude — whatever it is, you can see it. Rayo is only about one year old and 10 kg. His beginning wasn't what we would have chosen for him, but thankfully, that's behind him now. He was chosen that day. Now we need someone to choose him for life. Amy is one of them. She's tiny, she's about eight years old, and right now she's not well. She has tested positive for a tick-borne illness, and she has a tumor on the outside of her head that will also need to be addressed. But I want to show her now. Not when she's better. Not when the medical issues are behind her. Now. Because the dog you see today isn't necessarily the dog we're going to see a few months from now. I've watched this happen so many times over the years. Dogs come into rescue sick, neglected and needing medical care. We treat what needs treating. We give their bodies time to recover. And sometimes the transformation is incredible. That's what we're going to try to give Amy. Dr. Flores has a plan. First we deal with the tick-borne illness and get her stronger. Her bloodwork will be monitored, and when she's medically ready, we'll address the tumor on her head. Maybe she has six more years ahead of her. Maybe eight. We don't know. But I refuse to measure the value of her future by how she looks or feels today. She's here. We have her. And we're going to do everything within our power to get this little girl well. When she's ready, she's coming to Vancouver. When I was in Mexico with Yara, I went with her to pick up Rocco and Rael. A local man had taken them in to keep them off the streets and away from some of the dangers dogs face there, including the trains, traffic and other dogs. I was surprised by how basic the conditions were, but I was also incredibly grateful. This man was doing what he could, with what he had, to keep these dogs out of danger. And then there was Rocco. The moment we brought him out, he was so happy. He was loving, friendly and affectionate, and absolutely thrilled with all the attention. I remember watching him take everything in and thinking what a genuinely sweet little dog he was. Rocco is now in Yara's care, where he's receiving good-quality food, regular parasite prevention and all of his veterinary care. He's doing very well. Now we need to find the home that comes next for him. Rocco is currently in Mexico and can travel to British Columbia on one of our upcoming flights once his adoption application has been approved. I personally fly to Mexico to bring our rescues home. She is currently in Yara’s care in Mexico, and I had the opportunity to meet her when I was there. Greta is very timid, and she has become quite attached to Yara. She looks to her for comfort and reassurance, and you can see how much having someone she trusts means to her. At only one year old, Greta has so much life ahead of her, but we know she isn’t the kind of dog who should simply be placed into a busy home and expected to adjust overnight. She needs someone who has time, patience and a lot of love to dedicate to her. Someone who understands that trust may come slowly and who will allow Greta to move at her own pace. We would ideally love to find someone who is home quite a bit and can give her the consistency and security she needs while she settles in. There is a very sweet little dog underneath that shyness. She just needs the right person to help her feel secure enough to show it. Greta is currently in Mexico and can travel to British Columbia on one of our upcoming rescue flights once an adoption application has been approved. I saw him in a publication. He was being bullied by bigger dogs and needed help, and every part of me wanted to reach right through my phone, grab him and get him out of there. Of course, I couldn’t. That’s where Yara stepped in. I messaged her immediately: “He’s my dog. Please go get him.” And thankfully, she did. I was already in love with Winston before she even got there. I just needed to know he was safe and on his way back to Yara’s home. Yara does occasionally have to remind me that I cannot have all the dogs. So, as much as I would happily claim Winston as mine, we are looking for a wonderful home for this little guy. Winston is now safe in Yara’s care and doing very well. His veterinary check and blood work have been completed, and his 4DX SNAP test was negative. His CBC looks good, and he is getting everything he needs to prepare for his journey to Vancouver. Winston will arrive in early October and can travel home with an approved family. Azul was found wandering along a busy main street after neighbours reported seeing her roaming the area for several days. Concerned for her safety, they reached out for help, and she was brought to the veterinarian for a thorough examination. During her visit, it was discovered that Azul had already been spayed. Today, Azul is safe in rescue and doing very well. She has settled in beautifully and has shown herself to be a friendly, gentle dog who enjoys the company of both people and other dogs. As she continues to settle into her new routine, her sweet personality shines a little brighter every day. Now Azul is looking toward a brighter future. We would love nothing more than to see her leave her life on the streets behind and begin the next chapter of her life with a family who will love her, include her, and give her the safe, happy home she deserves. Azul can travel to Vancouver (YVR) on our August flight. She is currently receiving treatment for Ehrlichiosis, a tick-borne illness that is common in Mexico. Her treatment will be completed in July, and her 4DX SNAP test will be repeated before she travels. As part of our rescue protocol, we prefer to confirm that the treatment has been successful before she begins her journey to her new family.
