The rescue had to be be carefully planned because they were living in a dangerous area where they were constantly at risk of being hit by passing vehicles. Sadly, before Yara could bring them both to safety, tragedy struck. Shiver's mother was hit by a truck. She suffered for several days in pain before she was finally humanely euthanized to end her suffering. Yara was determined that Shiver would not suffer the same fate. Today, Shiver is safe in Yara's care, where she is receiving regular meals, shelter, veterinary care, and something she has likely never experienced before—patience and kindness. Although she is still frightened, each day she becomes a little more confident as she learns that not everyone uses their hands to cause harm. Now Shiver is looking toward a brighter future. Today, Aria is staying with a wonderful foster in Mexico — a kind gentleman Yara knows who has opened his home to her while we look for her family in British Columbia. I had the opportunity to meet both of them while I was in Mexico. Aria was such a happy little girl. Her tail was going, she was friendly, interested in meeting me and clearly enjoying the attention. It was lovely to see her comfortable and happy in her foster home, and equally lovely to meet the person who is taking such good care of her while she waits. Aria is only one year old and 10 kg. We're not certain of her breed — she is a true mixed breed, although there may possibly be some Border Collie in the mix. Her babies have been given their chance. Now we'd really like to give their mom hers. Aria is currently in Mexico and can travel to British Columbia on one of our upcoming rescue flights once an adoption application has been approved. Zuzu is 5 kg and Hugo is 4.5 kg, so even together they make a pretty small package. What matters most to us is finding a home that wants them both and understands that their bond is part of who they are. We also recognize that adopting two dogs at once means paying two adoption fees. For the right home, their adoption fee will be reduced. I had the opportunity to meet Casper when I was in Mexico at the beginning of October, and there was something about this sweet little boy that really touched my heart. He's shy and a little timid, but he has such a gentle nature. He allowed us to pick him up, walked nicely on his leash, and even joined us for a visit to the park. While everything around him was new, he was quiet and content just being outside with us. I couldn't help but think about how different his life could be with someone who would give him the patience and reassurance he needs. Casper isn't the kind of dog who will necessarily run into your arms the moment you meet him. He may hang back a little, observe what's happening and take his time deciding that everything is okay. And that's perfectly fine. I would love to find Casper a quieter home where he can settle into a comfortable routine without feeling overwhelmed. A busy household with lots of activity or young children probably wouldn't be the best fit for him. What I really want for Casper is someone who understands that building trust is a beautiful part of adopting a shy dog. Someone who won't expect too much too quickly, who will appreciate his quiet personality and give him the chance to develop confidence at his own pace. I can picture him enjoying walks, exploring new places, playing with his toys and discovering all the wonderful things life has to offer. He may need a little encouragement in the beginning, but that doesn't mean he won't grow to love new experiences and adventures. We’re guessing Dachshund/Heeler, but really, there may be a few other opinions hiding in there too. Whatever went into making her, the end result is a pretty adorable girl. Luna is doing really well at Yara’s. She has settled into rescue life, is comfortable around the other dogs and seems quite pleased with the whole regular-meals-and-people-looking-after-you arrangement. And considering how she came to us, I’m especially happy to see her doing so well. Luna was reported to Yara after people in a local area noticed that some of the larger dogs were going after her. She was a female on her own, surrounded by bigger dogs, and she was in a situation that could have become very bad very quickly. When Yara heard about her, she went to find her. Thankfully, she got there in time, found Luna and was able to bring her back with her. I remember feeling such relief knowing she was no longer out there having to watch her back or figure out how to keep herself safe. Now when I see her at the rescue, surrounded by dogs, eating well and just getting to be Luna, it makes me smile. But rescue was never supposed to be the final destination. At three years old, Luna has so much life ahead of her. Walks, adventures, a comfy place to sleep, someone to follow around the house and, if she has any say in the matter, probably a fairly important position supervising whatever her humans happen to be doing. She’s ready for the part where somebody looks at her funny little low-rider body and decides there should absolutely be one of those living in their house. Jarocho is the son of Arenita, another little dog who was rescued from the streets. He gets along very well with other dogs and is an incredibly gentle, affectionate little boy who loves being close to people. At just 5.4 kg, Jarocho is a lovely little companion who would do well with someone looking for a sweet, cuddly dog to share their life with. This little girl was reported on social media after someone noticed her wandering the streets. What made her situation even more heartbreaking was that she was expecting puppies. She had no home, no protection and nowhere safe to give birth. Thankfully, the person who reported Bimba helped catch her and bring her to a veterinary clinic. Yara immediately coordinated with the veterinarian to make sure she received the attention she needed. But Bimba's troubles were far from over. When she began showing signs of bleeding, Yara personally went to collect her. After arriving in Mendoza, it became clear that Bimba needed emergency surgery. Her puppies were too large, and the pregnancy had not yet reached full term. The heartbreaking decision had to be made to save Bimba's life, knowing that her puppies would not survive. I wish her story had been different. I wish she had never experienced pregnancy alone on the streets, frightened and vulnerable. But we cannot change what happened to Bimba. What we can do is make sure the rest of her life is filled with everything she should have had from the beginning. And what makes this little girl so special is that despite everything, she has so much love to give. Bimba is incredibly affectionate. She is the kind of dog who wants to be close to you, following you around and simply enjoying your company. She has a beautiful, gentle nature and gets along wonderfully with other dogs. There is something about her eyes that really touches your heart. Perhaps it is knowing what she has been through, or perhaps it is the sweetness you can see when she looks at you. At four years old and weighing just 6 kg, Bimba has so much life ahead of her. I would love to see her in a home where she never has to worry about where she will sleep or whether someone will be there to care for her. A home where she can curl up beside someone on the couch, enjoy her walks and be the affectionate little companion she so clearly wants to be. She has already experienced more sadness than any dog should have to endure. I hope the next chapter of Bimba's life is a long, happy one, filled with love, comfort and the security of knowing she belongs. During my recent trip to Mexico, I visited Señora Loren's rescue. There were dogs everywhere, each with their own personality. Some were outgoing, full of excitement and eager to come over for attention. And then there was Jade. Jade and her sister Ruby were different from many of the other dogs I met that day. They were more timid, quieter and a little unsure of themselves. There was something about their gentle nature that really touched me. I remember watching them and wishing I could somehow explain that there was a whole different world waiting beyond that rescue. A world where they could have families, enjoy walks, play with toys and experience all those ordinary little things that make a dog's life so special. But what happened when I was leaving is something I don't think I will forget. I had finished my visit, said my goodbyes and climbed into the car. Before we drove away, I turned around for one last look. And there, standing at the fence, were Jade and Ruby. Of all the moments from that visit, that was the one that brought tears to my eyes. I looked at those two young girls and felt that familiar heartbreak that comes with rescue. There are so many dogs needing homes, and no matter how much you want to help, you cannot possibly bring them all home with you. I wondered how long they might wait. Would someone notice them? Would they ever have the opportunity to experience life with a family? I couldn't leave without going back. So I got out of the car, walked over to the fence and spent another moment with them. I gave them some affection and told them I would do everything I could to help find them homes. It might seem like such a small moment, but it meant a great deal to me. And now, every time I look at Jade's photograph, I remember those two little faces looking out through that fence. Jade is only six months old. She has so much of her life ahead of her, and I don't want her to spend her puppyhood simply watching the world from behind a fence. She is a timid young girl who would benefit from a patient, understanding family willing to give her the time she needs to settle in and build confidence. I would love to see Jade discover the happiness of having her own home. To see her playing, exploring, going for walks and learning that the world doesn't have to be such an uncertain place. And one day, I would love to receive photographs of Jade curled up comfortably in someone's home, looking completely at ease, knowing she is loved. I think about that moment at the fence often. I couldn't take Jade with me that day, but I could come home and tell her story. And maybe, just maybe, the person who is meant to love this beautiful little girl is reading it right now. For me, Ruby is one of those dogs. During my recent trip to Mexico, I visited Señora Loren's rescue, where I had the opportunity to meet so many beautiful dogs, all with their own personalities and stories. But there was something about Ruby and her sister Jade that touched my heart. While many of the other dogs were confident, excited and eager for attention, these two girls were different. There are so many who need homes, so many waiting for someone to notice them. And no matter how much you want to, you cannot save them all or promise every single one that a family is waiting. I sat there looking at those two girls, knowing I was leaving and they were staying. And I couldn't just drive away. I got out of the car, walked back to the fence and gave them both some affection. I told them I would do my very best to find them homes. I don't know how much they understood, but I meant every word. And that is why I am sharing Ruby with you today. Ruby is only six months old. She is a beautiful young girl with a gentle, timid nature, and I would love to see her experience life outside of a rescue. I would love to see her have a family who will take the time to earn her trust, help her build confidence and show her how wonderful life can be. Someone who understands that a quieter, more cautious puppy may need a little extra patience as she adjusts to a new home. I can picture Ruby enjoying walks, playing in a yard, learning new things and eventually becoming comfortable enough to let her personality shine. She has so much growing and learning ahead of her. I know I cannot promise every dog I meet a home. That is one of the most difficult realities of rescue. But I made Ruby a promise that day at the fence. I promised her I would try. And perhaps someone reading her story today will be the reason I can keep that promise. That is what happened to Haru. At just one year old, this beautiful girl has already experienced the heartbreak of being abandoned by the very people who were supposed to care for her. Haru's story first appeared on social media when people began asking for help. Her family had moved away and simply left her behind, as though she didn't matter. From what was reported, her life with them hadn't been a particularly happy one, either. A concerned neighbour tried to find someone who would help her, but sadly, that help never came. Instead, Haru ended up at the municipal pound. I find it heartbreaking to think about how confusing that must have been for her. One day she had a home, even if it wasn't a very loving one, and the next she was left behind, eventually finding herself in a pound with no idea what would happen to her. Thankfully, Yara learned about Haru's situation and couldn't bear the thought of leaving her there. She applied to adopt Haru from the pound and brought her into her care. And now this beautiful girl has an opportunity for a completely different future. What I find especially sad about Haru's story is how easily she was discarded. Dogs don't understand why their families leave them. They don't understand that someone has decided they are no longer wanted. They only know the people they depended on are gone. At one year old, Haru should be enjoying everything that comes with being a young dog. Walks, playtime, affection, exploring new places and having someone who is genuinely happy to see her every day. That is the life I want for her. I would love to see Haru become someone's treasured companion. To have a family who includes her in their everyday life, who looks forward to coming home to her and who understands that bringing a dog into your family is a commitment for life. Haru didn't get to choose the people who abandoned her, but I hope we can help choose someone wonderful for the rest of her life. Her requirements are pretty reasonable: a comfortable lap, some room on the couch, plenty of love, and a human who won’t mind having a tiny sidekick involved in their day-to-day life. Personal space may become negotiable, but we think that’s a small price to pay. Not long ago, Sophie’s life looked very different. She was outside alone in the dark and rain when someone spotted her and shared her in a local publication, hoping help would come. When I saw the post, I immediately messaged Yara and asked if she could please go and look for this little girl. Yara didn’t hesitate. She went searching, found Sophie and brought her into our care. Now we get to give Sophie something even better — a person of her own. We can picture Sophie becoming someone’s little shadow, tagging along for walks, supervising things around the house, claiming her favourite spot on the couch and making herself a very important part of someone’s everyday life. At only one year old, she has her whole life ahead of her, and we have a feeling she could make somebody wonder how they ever lived without her.
